I need info on how to tighted up a slack throttle cable, I believe mine is currently a bit too slack. I have the Enthusiasts Manual but it seems a bit vague and only tells you how to replace the whole cable. How tight/taught should it be? By the way, its a 1990 Eunos Roadster (2/00)
The adjustment is done at the throttle body by turning the nuts so that the cable sleeve moves towards the bulkhead. This makes the sleeve effectively longer and so tightens the cable. The only "spec" I saw said "slightly sloppy slack". I took this to mean that there's some play so you know it's fully released. (2/00)
Had a little problem recently which I can't recall seeing mentioned here before. Symptoms were that when doodling along at about 30mph and wanting to speed up slightly, I'd press the accelerator almost unconsciously, as you do. But nothing happened, so I'd press a bit harder and eventually the throttle would 'jump' wider open resulting in a jerk. Very irritating - it got really hard to drive smoothly in heavy traffic. I've always kept everything well lubricated - but I squirted more oil on the pedal pivot, throttle butterfly and into the cable. Everything felt smooth when it was disconnected, but still the snag. So I replaced the cable - problem solved. I think maybe the inner had worn through the nylon sleeve inside the outer- there are a couple of very tight bends. There was no sign of damage on any of the visible part of the inner. The cable's not cheap, though - 60 odd. It is probably possible to get one made up at a bike shop, but you need the fittings (various grommets, adjuster, etc), so you'd have your car immobile whilst it was done, and it probably isn't easy to recover the grommet where the cable passes through the bulkhead and which acts as one of the Bowden outer end clamps. Might help someone! (12/01)
