Does anyone have the torque settings for the bolts that hold the rocker/cam cover on? (2/00)
4.9 - 8.8 Nm = 43 - 78 in lbs (ie 3.5 - 6.5 ft lbs - not very tight at all). Just a firm twist with a nut driver. And that will be too much! You need a very expensive torque wrench for such a low setting - it doesn't really matter - just don't overtighten them too much. (2/00)
Order is not important really but do the standard practice... i.e. spin them all in just so they are touching/ half tight and then go round in order tightening them .. twice (i.e. start one corner and pass go twice!) (2/00)
Nope - order isn't specified. (That's for the head bolts) But do them up evenly and gradually. If your cam cover gasket is leaking - sorry, but I've always found that the ONLY thing that works is a new one. And I've tried tightening and goo of various sorts. Nothing works - 'cept a new gasket. You need to put silicone sealant in the corners formed where the camshaft bearings are. (2/00) (Ed's note: a combined thread here hence the talk of gaskets)
I have had my cam cover off and on lots of times and have never replaced the gasket - never needed to. No leakage at all. (2/00)
I can see black patches where mine has leaked, but as the cover leaks via the vent tube what's the problem?! (2/00)
Well, your engine gets nasty and oily - and it should be clean and stay that way. If the cover is leaking via the vent tube (ie where the PCV valve pushes in) you need a new rubber insert (seal) for the PCV valve socket. These inserts and the gasket go hard over time. (incidentally, so do the rubber tubes which connect the air inlet tract with the cam cover - either end of the chrome pipe - and the tube from the PCV valve to the inlet manifold) I don't deny Si's point - you can take the cover off and on frequently without getting leaks. But once the gasket has gone hard, that's it - you need a new one. A friend of mine has a theory that you can boil them up in water and that will soften them enough to give a new lease of life. Even my penny-pinching doesn't run to that - sometimes a new proper item is the only way! (2/00)
.. ah take the sump off and you find instant gasket .. so mine goes back on with the tiniest amount of goop... but then under 30k miles .. and age/heat makes all the difference with rubber gaskets like that. (2/00)
