| I made the mistake this morning of clearing
the mist/water on the outside of my rear screen with a credit card,
and when I went out at lunchtime I noticed some credit card sized
terrible scratches. I dont really understand how...but anyway. My
question is what is the best way to remove scratches from a plastic
screen. Can I use T -cut or autoglym car polish? (11/99) |
| If the scratches aren't too deep, go to your nearest BMW dealer
and ask for part number 81 22 9 407 665. That should be an excellent
product for plastic window care. I haven't tried it myself, having
a mk2 with a glass window :^p, but the people on the barchetta mailing
list seem to be very happy with it. (11/99) |
| Get hold of Meguirs plastic polish and cleaner. Worked a treat
for me: Not sure who sells it in the UK though: Moss? Some also
say liquid brasso works well as well. (11/99) |
| I think it was Meguirs that I picked up at Billing - not sure
off the top of my head. If so, then you can buy it from JAG
Bags (don't know the number, sorry).. If it's not Meguirs I
have at home then JAG Bags do sell some pretty good polishes for
the window.. They had about 3-4 different levels from light polish
to heavier scratch removal polish - seems quite good stuff from
the 1 time I've used it so far. (11/99) |

There are 2 grades, one for getting the scratch out, one for
polishing and general cleaning - "restoring optical clarity" as
our marketing friends would say ;-) Miata.Net FAQ suggests Meguiar's
#17 Plastic Cleaner and #10 Plastic Polish. (11/99)

| Spent most of the afternoon cleaning the car and decided to try
my autoglym polish on the rear plastic screen. After cleaning with
the autoglym glass cleaner I slapped on some polish. What a difference
!! Did the inside as well and its as close to perfection as I think
I have ever seen it since buying the car. (3/00) |
| Is there any way of having the rear PLASTIC window totally
zip out to avoid the "scrunch" damage in the first place? (1/00) |
| For not much more than you've been quoted [to replace the plastic
window] you could get a really good GLASS rear window put in which
doesn't suffer all the issues with non visibility etc. The MATT
DEVELOPMENTS window, £230 from Donutz
You do have to fit yourself ( video included to show how ) but the
quality of vision is great. (1/00) |
| Any decent trimmer familiar with fitting new plastic back windows
to MX's could also fit it for you. (1/00) |
| I had mine replaced after splitting it by putting the roof down
when it was cold (and forgetting to unzip the window! ) - Doh! :-(
£100 for a new window, the whole roof had to be taken off, the old
window was then cut out and a new one double stitched in. Looks
pretty good, although the new window is stitched on the outside
of the roof section to avoid leaks. (1/00) |

I'd heard in the past that regular car polish can be used
to clean the plastic rear screen fitted to the Mk1, so yesterday
before washing the car I set about the rear window with the Autoglym
(Super Resin Polish). Firstly I tried a small area just to make
sure it didn't do any harm - seemed ok so proceeded to do whole
window.
After a couple of applications (plus one to the inside as
well) it looks a whole lot better. Not quite as good as new, but
very nearly there. A bonus is that water runs off it a lot more
easily now as well. If you want to see what a difference it makes
try cleaning the drivers side whilst leaving the passenger side
untouched. (I didn't think of this until after I'd finished, otherwise
I would have taken a photo - doh!)
A quick tip - make sure you let the polish dry fully before
buffing off - go and make a coffee or something for five minutes.

| I used Brasso on my old frog eyed sprite and the back window came
up as new. (2/00) |
