I'm getting a rattly noise from under the car when my revs are low and in the wrong gear (ie 2000 revs in 3rd) It dosn't sound mechanical, more like a vibrating sheet of metal. It's hard to say where it's coming from, either below us or the engine. Any ideas what it could be? (6/00)
the first bit of the exhaust downpipe - after the three bolt coupling on the header - is about 10 inch long and has a small heatshield tack welded at the front and positively held by a clamp at the rearmost end. These tackwelds give up the ghost and cause tinny vibrations at certain engine speeds. A large jubilee clip will hold these shields in place, can't tell you what size as I haven't found one big enough yet - probably 3 to four inch. (6/00)

Heat shield on the exhaust manifold, or one of the cat heat shields, either the one bolted to the car or the one surrounding the cat itself (and effectively forming part of it)

These all corrode and/or come loose. All can be fixed , but it can be difficult to release some of the bolts. You might need to patch corroded metal, replace bolts (preferably with stainless) or remake the folded metal joint around the cat. (6/00)

Same rattle on mine. It seems to be when you're lugging the engine, below 2k RPM. I just keep it above that mark. Not any useful power down there anyway. (6/00)
I had the same problem, in my case it was the bonnet catch allowing the bonnet to vibrate slightly?? (6/00)
