Some of you may be aware that Mazda issues Recall notices on cars which mean that they are obliged to contact their registered owner and advise of a fault and arrange for it to be rectified. This items are also checked at service time as far as I am aware.

There are also TECHNICAL NOTES which require YOU as the customer to tell the dealer of a fault. If that fault is covered by a Technical note then you will get the issue resolved.

A recent example of this is the Seat cover on the MK2, which splits due to a rubbing issue. Unless you see it and tell them they won't do anything about it.

Also to look out for on the MK2 is the roof not folding back properly and getting caught on the glass. This can be resolved by changing a spring or two!

Finally the fuel return valve which can cause problems when filling up the car again on MK2. The way to get them fixed is simply to report the problem, like in the case of the fuel valve tell them you are having problems filling up the car sometimes. Only affects some early MK2 cars.

Hope it is of help to some of you. (6/00)

You can get this service bulletin information online in the US. Here's the top level of items for 1999 1.8s. http://www.alldata.com/pro/TSB/33/99331166.html More details costs. :-( But just knowing the items must help. Any way we can extract this information in the UK? (6/00)
Where do you find out about the technical notes or is just a case of reporting faults? (6/00)
Have a look at: http://www.alldata.com/pro/TSB/yr.html and drill down to your car. The site is a bit slow (for me anyway). ...or even miata net, there are some tech notes there too. (6/00)
I've had a quick look at both of these sites, searching for details of the weak crankshaft keyway problem on very early (mainly american) cars but couldn't find anything. Any suggestions where else to look? (6/00)
From Garage Section of Miata.net but would really like to find a UK version - if someone has a 'friendly' dealer that could be a route. (6/00)

As someone who's wrestling with a dodgy zip whilst the rest of the roof is just fine - I am very much intested in reading the following service bulletins: S00793 FEB 93 Soft Convertible Top - Zipper Replacement 02792 APR 92 Soft Convertible Top Zipper Replacement Where should I go from here? (6/00)

The April Service bulletin is at: http://www.miata.net/garage/tsb/s027_92.html All it says is take the car to an autotrimmer, but the zip can be installed in situ. Contact Duetto Motors, linked from the Miata.net web site. They told me they can supply the zip used in their hood; its much heavier duty than the original. Maybe they have install information.

This also lists a brief synopsis of service bulletins, recalls and other defect investigations (recalls: airbags in 95 Mk1's, ABS in early cars, hardtop hoist in early cars, wire loom problems in early Mk2's, fuel filler problems in Mk2's): http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/ (6/00)

Why not just read them on miata.net?

http://www.miata.net/garage/tsb/ or enter www.miata.net and follow garage, then click on Miata Service Bulletins (at the top of the icons - not 'Service Bulletins from Alldata') (6/00)

Just to let you know that there is a Technical Bulletin regarding the potential tearing of the soft top fabric on EARLY MK2 cars.

"Fabric may wear on inside in the B Pillar area. Eventually the fabric may tear"

Occurs just behind the door, almost level with the window. VINS after JMZNB18**00113070 ( 1 July 1998 ) should not be affected by this issue.

Problem is due to combination of issues:
1) Hood bar may be too short which traps the top fabric when lowering the roof
2) Rivet on the link bar has a foam pad on the back of it. When hood is folded down the rivet can rub on the roof IF the pad has become detached.

There are items to rectify the issue if the vehicle is brought in for service and problems are apparent, these are:
a) To change the pad for a bigger one and ensure it is stuck on.
b) Replace the Two hood tensioning springs
c) Replace roof if torn!

You may wish to get your dealer to check your hood is functioning correctly before the early cars get out of 3 year warranty!! Remember it is only cars BEFORE the VIN mentioned above, so recent new purchases are not at issue.
