Has anyone solved the irritation of trying to write down a message in the 5 at night. I am frequently on call and when my phone goes I end up with my head in the footwell in some layby. (11/99)

Get a lighted mirror from PBC.

While at Beaulieu I noticed that some '5's have extra interior lights on either side of the centre console where I have only blanking plates. I am referring to the right next to the glove box and the one on the other side next to the steering column not the blanking plates lower down on the side of the centre console. Can anyone supply me with part nos. for these 2 lights as I would like to add these to my '5. I have a trip to Mazda coming up shortly for the 54k service so could order them for then :) (4/00)
I believe you can get these lights from Moss (4/00)
Moss sell the interior lights you're after Light kit , black trim MXV1113X LIGHT KIT , TAN TRIM MXV1114X (4/00)
You are thinking of the wrong part, I want the Mazda part that is on the dash part of the facia not the central console. It is on cars that do no have the light in the centre at the top of the windscreen AFAIK (4/00)
I have those on my SE - thought they were standard fit on all MX5's. One each side, has a sliding switch above the light ON/DOOR/OFF, also come on when the boots open - why???? :) (4/00)
Get some off a scrapper - all earlier (might even be up to '95) cars came with them. (4/00)
I got fed up with my car only having these bottom lights and having to almost disappear into the footwell to read a map. I could have bought a lighted mirror, but being a tight arse, I came up with another solution. I have added some extra lights in the holes left by the removal of my sun visors. They are wired diectly in to the existing lights, so that whenever they are on, the corresponding "visor light" is also on. (4/00)

I wonder if you can get these lights from your Mazda dealer. I know that Finishlineperformance sell them, but probably other aftermarket suppliers do to.

I have some in my '5 (won the lights at the Paris meeting at a raffle) and I like them. They are really an improvement but USD 31 (plus shipping VAT and import tax) for just two bulbs, some plasic and wire is a bit steep. (4/00)

I have read somewhere on the net that if you remove and rotate by 180 degrees and install the interior lights , the one at the side of the glove compartment and the other next to the steering column , the light will now not light up the footwell but light up the interior instead, something to do with the perspex front on the light having a directional lens, not tried it myself - give it a go. They moved them, up to 96 it seems (typical) cars had two interior lights one to the right of the glove box and one just below the cigarette lighter. I just have blanking plates, instead I have a light above the rear view mirror. Not perfect though as it does not manage to illuminate the interior. (4/00)
Have you tried the 'turn the light round' technique? The lighting is a common problem on the 5, and some bright spark (ha ha) thought instead of having the lights lighting up your feet instead of the cockpit, they would try turn the whole light unit round and see what that did. "Whahey, I can see!" came the exclamation. Give it go, pull the light out, turn the whole thing upside down and see how you get on. Your feet are now in darkness but you can now see elsewhere in the car (disadvantage is the switches are further away and now switch the opposite way to what you are used to). (8/00)
I also got fed up with the crap illumination in my car, so I decided to put the holes left by the removal of my sun visors (couldn't see half the road with the damn things in the way) to good use. I have fitted a small bulb in each hole, wired directly in to the lights by your knees. Makes the world of difference. (8/00)
