I phoned my insurance broker today to find out whether body
kit (chin spoiler and rear wing), roll-over bar and cat-back exhaust
(total est £1000) would affect premiums, and two things were revealed:
1) My insurance broker doesn't know what a cat-back exhaust or
a roll-over bar is
2) for the remaining 4 months of my policy, they would want an
estimated extra £50-£75 (depending on exact cost), which represents
a 30 - 45 % increase on my premium, as well as a increase in excess
from £250 to £450!
He also told me, after having called the insurers, that "although
they don't approve of this sort of thing, they would be willing
to continue insuring the car". Bloody cheek! What do you guys
do about non-performance modifications? Do you tell your insurers,
or do you just swallow the cost if knackered? (12/99)

I told my insurance company about the body kit and said it was
mainly for cosmetic reasons - it didn't make the car go any faster.
Also I told them about the Jackson exhaust, and it never made
any difference to the premium.
Also when I changed to Aon I told them about all these things
and the hardtop, and the premium was still only 260. Change
your insurance company, that's what I would do. (12/99)

| When you renew try AON, apparently modifications do not make that
much difference to the premium. My current and soon to be ex-insurance
company Hastings said anything that increased performance - different
filter and exhaust and exterior modifications would increase the
premium. They charged 50 extra for having alloy wheels. (12/99) |

I was just wondering what parts are or are not standard on
a H-reg Roadster and which ones I should tell any potential insurance
company about, the car is as follows. 1990 H-reg Classic Red Eunos
Rear Spoiler
Momo Steering Wheel
Steel Pedals
Black Alloys
I'm looking to do the following
Silver 14" Alloys
Wooden Gear Knob,
Handbrake Leaver,
Wood Finish On Dash
Dual Light Conversion (3/00)

Well, if it was me:
Tell 'em about the spoiler and the black alloys. The Momo wheel
is probably standard (or have you changed it?). The metal pedals
are illegal for street use anyway (that's why the Demon Tweeks
catalogue says "For motorsport/show use only") Don't know where
that leaves an awful lot of us - but mine is only the accelerator
pedal that's ally.
I guess you should tell them about new non-standard wheels and
dual lights - but where do you stop? Taking the stubber bar out
of the ashtray? Replacing rusty nuts in the engine bay with new
non-Mazda ones? Stick on notepads and phone holders?
I'm sure if everyone told their insurance companies about every
last mod, the industry would grind to a halt. (3/00)

| The metal pedals are not illegal .. but there was a court case
that was lost after someone sued after crashing with the aftermarket
ones fitted .. foot slipped or was trapped under the broader pedal
in their go faster passion wagon :-) .... so Demon and Moss etc
have to put the disclaimer on the products .. of course if they
have no gripping features they could be illegal ... mine have raised
rims on the countersunk holes (came off my first car..) (3/00) |
