I am looking for a hard top for the MX5 - preferably for a Merlot (Vin Rouge) but would consider black. I see Moss advertise a black one - anybody out there seen it or can comment on quality - I notice it has a plastic rear window instead of the glass one of the OE Mazda version. (11/99)

You ask specifically about the Moss hardtop - I saw it a few weeks ago at the Classic Car show it was *not* impressive. Here's what I wrote at the time :

MOSS'S HARDTOP Moss's NEC Classic Car Show offer this weekend is their black hardtop for 675 quid inclusive. A great bargain? - well probably not ...... the quality looks decidedly iffy to me ... it's OK from a distance but close up the edges of the top seem quite rough, the seal with the bodywork looks pretty wavy in places, and there's signs of sticky black sealant all round the (perspex) rear screen. Also the fittings look *very* DIY ..... in fact that's what I think Moss should do with this top - sell it as a DIY job for the handy types amongst us, but at about 350 GBP maximum ......

Another possibility is to phone round any local importers of Japanese cars and ask if they have any original hardtops for sale - offer 500 quid and see what happens. You won't find a Merlot coloured one but they're not very big to have sprayed. (11/99)

We have a heated glass back window in a standard top. It works for us. All the visibility and I drove to work at 7:00 with the top down despite the 5C temperatures! (11/99)
