| All the speedo conversions I have seen for Roadsters
show the top speed at 140 MPH. But if converted , the top speed
on a Roadsters original face is 118(ish)MPH. So, are these faces
supplied with UK gearing type thingys for the back of the speedo
or is the speedo just going to be incorrect all the time??? Is there
a true replacement speedo face that one can buy?? (1/00) |
| The speedo will be incorrect. You'll need to replace the entire
unit. (1/00) |
| My Roadster has a speedo conversion which goes up to 110 mph.
I'm not sure who fitted it but I think it was probably Goodman
Bros. in Cirencester. (01285-861880) (1/00) |

Various; some better than others. Many sold in the UK may in
fact be illegal; poorly lit, or (here's a new one to me) no kph
ticks marked (and they must be illuminated). According to one
MOT examiner here in N. Ireland, the speedo faces require illuminated
mph as the major scale, and illuminated kph as the minor scale.
This is where I was quick off the mark with the Canadian car
in Saggart; 220 kph speedo (I guess I could have changed the face
on this to 140 mph version) and metric oil gauge, which I swapped
with someone for a US speedo and oil gauge. The whole instrument
panel was a bargain IR£30 (about £26). I have some spare gauges
going cheap for anyone (£15 the lot plus post; fuel gauge, rev
counter, metric oil pressure gauge ("real") and temperature gauge,
all work fine. Plus I'll throw in the backing panel and circuit
board from a 91-92 Canadian Miata; doesn't work properly in the
Roadster as the brake light stays on (there are some extra resistors
soldered in). 5Speed were advertising coloured gauge faces for
MX5's and Roadsters, so presumably 2 different versions.
There was also a gearing system at one time (advertised by jcars.com,
who have since disappeared) to convert a 180 kph speedo to 180
mph for £100 which is kind of pricey for something doesn't look
right. Mazdaparts in the US were doing Miata clock sets (won't
split) for $125 plus post. Is this for the NCT? (1/00)

All the speedo conversions I have seen for Roadsters show
the top speed at 140 MPH.
?????? All the ones I've seen go to 110 or 120. Mine is marked
to 120 (at about the half past five position) AFAIK, it's pretty
accurate. The speedo has an internal stop at about 116mph, so
it never reads more than that. Need calcs from the rev counter
from there on. ;-) BTW - got my dial face conversion from Demon
Tweeks - there are plenty of others about. (1/00)
|
| The internal limiter on the 1.6 is pretty easy to remove (and
crude; when the speedo reaches an indicated 180 kph, a contact is
made and the rev limiter kicks in). Some say remove the 180 SW screw,
but you might as well remove the speed limiter gubigins from the
speedo it self; just a couple of wires. (1/00) |
| The speed limiter is removed. Speed isn't limited by the speedo
detector - my car will do 126 mph by extrapolation from the rev
counter. But there is an internal stop, so the needle won't try
to go round again. It's at 116 mph. (1/00) |

Well spotted, I didn't notice that until I had bought a set of
white dials, not only for the look but also to change from MPH
to KPH.
The dials are straight replacements with no gearing change. So
at low speeds (30) their reading is just about spot on. However
the faster you go, the wider the margin for accuracy. By 80 your
the speedo would be reading 100/105 MPH.
The only compensation is that if you run to the speed limit you
will in fact be going slower rather than faster & not be caught
by speed cameras :o)
I will be having a rolling road test just to check the top end
difference in an attempt to see how much difference there is.

| No, I don't think the NCT requires a MPH speedo (yet to be confirmed).

Speedos and speed restrictors for Roadsters; There are 5 combinations
of Mk1 Speedo heads out there;
1. UK - mph and 140 mph max
2. US = as UK but 'USE UNLEADED FUEL ONLY' at the bottom
3. Euro = as UK but kmph as main numbers
4. Japan/Eunos original (illegal in UK) = 180 kph max (to go with
the 112mph speed limiter fitted)
5. Japan/Eunos fitted with printed face - this still is 180 kph
but now has 100 mph as the maximum number in large writing.
They all have the same gearing/ratios but the maximum is higher
on non Roadster speedos - 110 is at 4 O'clock on a Roadster but
2 O'clock on a Euro car .. hence Euro car speedo can read 140mph.
You can get a little in line gearbox to change to km to miles.
so trip meter works and you add stickers to the face to change
it to miles.. if you just go for replacement dial face on an Eunos
Speedo the trip/odometer will still record in kms..
So then you come to aftermarket dials - these are all for the
UK/US 140 mph style speedo head - you could get custom ones but....
if you want to know how much faster than 110 mph you are going
you need a UK/US speedo;
1. UK scrapyard but be quick as they are the first thing to go..
2. US scrapyard - I got my first pair from Mazmart at about 80-100ea
GBP
3. Mazda UK = 320 GBP if they would sell it to you!
Also if you have an Eunos. do you know it is speed limited to
112mph - this is easy on the 1.6 (remove a wire from the speedo),
on the 1.8 this option is not so easy as the ECU uses the speedo
cruise control output to control the speed and also control the
engine (maybe... unknown what removing the speed sensing wire
from speedo does)
According to the MOT hotline (0891-615977) your car IS illegal
with a Kph only speedo For those that are interested and need
to convince their dealer that the car should have miles and kilometres,
the UK regulation is:- The Road Vehicles ( Construction and Use
) Regulations 1986 - Regulation 35 The European Community directive
is 75/443/EEC . You can speak to the Vehicle Inspectorate direct
on 01792 458888. (1/00)

My speedo reads in mph, but the odometer and trip meter are
still both in kilometers. This is different to the Skyline I imported
where the conversion process took care of these - both then read
in miles.
As far as I recall, there's either some electronic setting
that does it, or a miniature 1.6x:1 gearbox that fits onto some
speedo drive cable or other. Can either be done to the Eunos?
Is it feasible to also alter the odometer reading (e.g. so
that 80,000km becomes 50,000m)? What's been done to other Eunoses?

Most have had a replacement speedo face that reads 0-110 or 0-120
mph, and kept the kms odometer reading. Some of these may be illegal
(according to an MOT inspector) if they do not show mph _and_
kph (as minor scale) illuminated at night. I was picked up for
this at my last MOT (didn't fail, but the tester thought it was
iffy, and the testers here have no profit motive like in GB).
There was a company (www.jcars.com)
which advertised a speedo recalibration service; recalibrate the
speedo in mph (so it reads 0-180 mph), and the odometer reads
off in miles. Apparently involved a box of tricks on the speedo
cable. However, it appears that their website is now dead.
Mazda UK sell mph speedos for 200, and are now levying an outrageous
200 exchange fee upon receipt of a "broken mph speedo". I fitted
a US speedo; the odometer reading is about 5000 miles more than
my actual, close enough that I'm not bothering to reset the clock
(looks easy enough btw, but I reckon I've got an honest face when/if
I come to sell).
Mazmart (www.mazmart.com)
will sell you an entire used Miata instrument binnacle for $125
plus post; bonus is you get to change the oil pressure gauge to
PSI. The only difference in speedos is that US ones are marked
"unleaded only". The speedo is a straight swap for the kph one,
nothing else required. (4/00)

Thanks, that link looks useful. I've also been offered a US Miata
speedo so there's plenty to follow up. (I have to say that folk
on this list are an awful lot more helpful/responsive than the
GTR list!), I'd also want the odo reset to the miles equivalent
of my current kilometre reading (c56000km).
Anyone know roughly how much it'd cost to get this done and replacement
instruments fitted by an independent? I want the changeover paperworked
to avoid accusations of clocking when I sell it on. (4/00)

I've had my Eunos for 18 months now and loved every minute
of it. When I bought the car it was still reading km/h and the
garage promised to change this to mph before I picked it up. When
I went to pick it up the work hadn't been done, I was too excited
to wait another week (dial face had to ordered) so I agreed to
bring the car back at a later date. The garage is over 70 miles
away so it took a couple of months to arrange an appropriate date.
The garage carried out the work, and everything seemed fine but
on the way home I found the speedo was reading about 15 mph under
and the oil pressure gauge was reading 6 all the time (settling
at 1 when the engine was off). To cut a long story short 4 visits
to the garage and 12 months later the speedo is still 15 mph under
and the oil pressure is the same.
The garage tell me the speedo head unit has blown and they
don't know if it can take an MX-5 unit. Can anyone tell me if
it can or does it need to be a Jap one ? (1/01)
|
| Sounds like they have made a bit fo a b@lls of it! I replaced
mine, easy job, bought it from Lockspeed in Leeds for about 20 (ish)
half hour job! It's just a new dial that replaces the old one, the
trip still reads in KM's. (1/01) |
| The speedo face fitted isn't one that is 0-140 mph calibrated?
If so, its wrong, it should be (for a Eunos) 0-110 or 120 (they
vary). A UK or US 0-140 Speedo is a straight swap, but hard/expensive
to come by (you can get a complete set of clocks from the US for
$120 plus post). Most breakers will charge £100 or so for a complete
set of clocks, but won't split them. Which is just as well, as your
oil pressure gauage sounds like its up the spout. (or the oil pressure
sender unit) Try KaYu, they specialise in Roadsters: www.kayuautos.com
Eunos specific speedo face is about £20-25. (1/01) |
|
A UK unit will fit, but you'll find it very hard to find one,
and it'll be expensive. Isn't it just a case of the needle having
been pushed on in the wrong place?. And the oil pressure gauge
too far so that it sticks. (They didn't need to touch the OP gauge
- maybe they leant on it by mistake.)
I'd make contact with club members in the area and find someone
who can help you sort it out - it shouldn't be too difficult.
You can find instructions on miata.net (garage) for fitting coloured
dial faces - same procedure. (1/01)
|
| You don't say if the car is a Mk1 or 2. The Mk1 is mechanical,
the Mk2 is electric. Finding a UK or US one is not easy and likely
to be expensive. I got one from the US a little while ago which
was ok but it cost in total just over £100 and had 245,000 miles
on it!! It sounds as if the needle was not put on correctly whichever
type. Not necessary to buy another if you know what you are doing.
