Beware that there may be issues around getting insurance for a Eunos or Miata.

I spoke to Barclays and they said they could insure my Miata for 475 with only 100 excess. As the car is not a Eunos or a California and the log book says MX5 they said can go as an MX5. I rang yesterday to get the insurance from Barclays and asked them again if this was OK with the spec.

Again they said yes.... I then asked them to write this stoneware on the policy and they said they would have to get back to me. I got a call a few hrs later saying that even though the car is not a eunos the car must be insured as so. And the price will go up to 710. This was such an easy way to get caught out because if I had to claim there would be no proof of the misinformation that I was provided. (11/99)

For those that are interested we bought the car in January 1998 and decided to insure with Privilege. They were told that the car was an Eunos Roadster imported from Japan and they adjusted the premium accordingly. However we were told that they could only state MX-5 on the schedule as their computer system did not allow input of "free-style" car descriptions. Odd, but we paid the premium and returned the signed schedules along with a letter confirming all the car's details. We did this again when renewing in January of this year. When my partner had her accident they claimed no previous knowledge of the car being an import, wanted an extra premium and to impose a higher excess. It took them five weeks to locate our original signed schedules and letters. During this time I made countless telephone calls and never received any communication from them at all. They also refused to authorise a courtesy car for my partner. (12/99)
