My Eunos has a green mushroom shape air filter fitted which has a green sponge filter. Can any one suggest how to clean it and with what. (12/99)
I also have one of these fitted to my 1990 Roadster. Does anyone know if the filters are available in this country or are they washable?? If washable what should they be washed in. The fitting instructions came with my car but, guess what, they are in Japanese. (12/99)
This "green mushroom" sounds like a HKS SuperPowerFlow Filter. The official answer is "No, you ought to buy a replacement element from your HKS dealer. The official element is treated at the factory and is not designed to be washed and re-oiled". Something to do with it being a sandwich of different size filters or somesuch.... Many people say "they would say that wouldn't they?" and wash/re-oil anyway... Whether this results in a badly clogged filter 1,000 miles later is anybody's guess. Note, a replacement element is apparently only 13. Biggest U.K. HKS stockist is TDI (Torque Developments) of Barking. (12/99)
.. I used K&N cleaning kit .. expensive at 28 GBP .. really just petrol, blow dry and coat with 3in1 oil in a crude manner.. (12/99)
28!!! I only paid 8 for my K&N cleaning kit (spray on soapy stuff, and aerosol red-dyed oil) K&N reckon on no petrol for their cotton filters. (12/99)

You can re-use the filter HKS filter if it's cleaned properly at 4000 mile intervals. Just make sure that the filter is re-oiled properly (just a little oil to make the material glisten). You can buy the oil from most bike shops and it'll be a lot cheaper than official filter oil ;-) . Normal dealers/manufacturers tend to recommend changing air filters at 10000-12000 intervals. Make it a routine to clean the filter everytime you have the oil changed and you'll be make the filter last a bit longer as well as constantly having your air filter at near optimum performance all the time.

I've used the HKS panel filter (same two type material) and when I sold my last car it had already been re-used 4 times. Any affect on the breathing? Had the car dynoed just before it was sold and the power figures were no less than the previous 2 rolling road sessions. BTW this was a MR2 turbo and any little problems would equate to the engine telling you so

While on the same subject, some guys in the US have tested the Blitz cone filter. Looks good and allows a lot of air in. Downside is that it's better breathing also allows quite big particles into the system. Can't remember how many microns but the testers were not impressed, their opinion was to steer clear. (12/99)
