| Can any one confirm that the roadster battery
is the same as the one fitted to the mx, is it the same size & is
it sealed? (11/99) |
| Yes, yes, and yes. The WestCo battery from Moss is a good (if
slightly expensive) replacement, but nowhere near as expensive as
buying one from Mazda ! (11/99) |
| I read somewhere that if you quote the following part number at
your local Mazda dealer, it turns out to be for a gel-type battery
as originally fitted. No idea of the price though. B61R-18-520C
Might be worth a try. (11/99) |
| The original Roadster battery is a real one-off, specially made
for the MX-5, and replacements weren't even available from Mazda
as they could only make enough to fit new cars! Although 'maintenance
free' it's not fully sealed, the vent cap has a hose which carries
fumes out of the boot. Mazda produced an adaptor kit to fit a larger
battery, and I've also seen an advert for a gel filled battery to
replace the original. I've not delved into the boot to confirm this,
but my manual says the standard battery is an S46A24L(S). (11/99) |

How much is it and what's so good about it? I must admit I have
a 40 quid vented lead-acid in ours! Seems to work fine and no
sign of rust or anything. (11/99)

| Erm - I think it was just under 90 quid, but the advantages are;
It's teeny (anything to increase boot space :-) It's completely
sealed, to the extent that it's the only car battery that can be
sent through the post ! (and so needs no venting) Thinking about
it though, a vented soggy battery for less than half the price does
begin to make sense ! Heigh-ho; at the end of the day, anything
was better than the original battery I had; I hate not being sure
if my car will even turn over, let alone start in the mornings :-(

| The original (Panasonic) battery is still available, on special
order only, for about #75. I know of 2 people who recently got this
via local Mazda dealers (for imports). Of course, this isn't much
use for peope who need a new battery _now_ The original Roadster
