I am looking into buying my first MX5. I am wanting an 1990 Eunos model with Automatic transmission. Please could anyone help me? I would like to here reports from anyone who has driven or own an auto "5". I would like to know the pro's and cons and comparisons to the manual version! (2/00)

I don't normally admit to this as I get a ribbing for driving an automatic sports car, personally though I think it's jealousy! I've very recently purchsed a stunning blue Auto and I can't see any drawbacks whatsoever. It is the first automatic car I have owned and I can't figure out why Ihaven't before.

I was driving around the South Coast today and she handles so well round corners, the best thing is I don't have to change gear so I can concentrate on throwing her round the corners even more and enjoying the drive!

If you are buying an import there is less chance the gear box has been abused, also if you really want to get that true sports car drive out of one you can drive it like a manual if you want. I guess the downside is auto's have a slightly higher fuel consumption but my baby isn't noticeably thirtsy on fuel. The guy I bought mine off had 2 in but both have sold but if you were to speak to him I'm sure he's got some on the way over to sunny England.

The guy's website url is www.hbrewster.freeserve.co.uk David's a really nice guy and his cars are pretty immaculate, there's some info on his site about Automatics which may be of interest to you. (2/00)

Cons:
Slower
Drink more fuel
Heavier
More expensive to maintain
Harder to sell
Less fun

Pros:
Makes MX5 driving available to those with either/both of their left limbs missing/dysfunctional. I don't even have an auto box on my big V8 luxo-barge, and really can't see why someone would have one on a sports car. It's rather missing the point. Not a flame, just my opinion. (2/00)

I have to disagree with Slower and more expensive to maintain, plus they're rare in the UK so I don't think that makes them harder to sell, a guy walked up to me in a petrol station the other day and asked if he could buy my auto as he has been looking for one for ages. Also disagree with less fun, more fun cos you havent got to worry about that gear stick all the while. I agree probably thirsty on fuel, heavier? not sure, will get out the kitchen scales later ! Personal preferences I guess, I never would have bought an automatic until I drove the beast 2 weeks ago ! (2/00)

I have to disagree with Slower and more expensive to maintain, All the figures I've seen show them as slower. plus they're rare in the UK so I don't think that makes them harder to sell, a guy walked up to me in a petrol station the other day and asked if he could buy my auto as he has been looking for one for ages.

Fair enough. I guess if you can find the right person you're laughing.

Also disagree with less fun, more fun cos you haven't got to worry about that gear stick all the while.

Worry? Why would you worry about it? Your left foot and arm handle it without anything in the way on conscious thought. With a manual you don't have to worry about being in the wrong gear or the sodding thing changing down on corners. I've owned an automatic car and have driven hundreds of them from all major manufacturers. I find driving them unpleasant and I won't ever buy another.

Fair enough. As long as you're happy that's fine, but autos and small engines have always seemed a bad match to me. Plus sports cars are all about control and driving pleasure. A slush box seems to be working against this. BTW How many gears does the MX5 auto have? (2/00)

You can change the gear when you want ! It's just you only have 4 ! (2/00)
Ok then, so why the auto in the first place ? You have lost out on a gear and thus have slower acceleration. :? As long as you enjoy it - thats all that matters (that and going topless)!! (2/00)
A chap who used to work with me has a BRG auto Roadster and he has had problems with the transmission for quite a while, not sure of details as he has left the company now. The really funny thing is that before he bought the Roadster he always slagged me off about driving a "hairdressers car !!", obviously saw the light after a test drive. (2/00)
I agree especially when stuck in slow moving traffic (M25) no gear changing just sit back and listen to the radio. As for fun have you ever tried kick-down at roundabouts (leaving other MX5s getting into gear) or using manual shift from 2 to drive around country roads (one movement gets you 2/3/4 gear. You also get overdrive at the touch of a button. However I do admit I'm biased having replaced my non-automatic TR6 with a Eunos (average force for TR6 clutch is 70 lbs.) (2/00)
