OK techies...according to the blurb on the back of oil the majority of engine damage is done in the first x mile/minutes, so my question is: 'What is the best way to warm your engine up?'

When I was first driving I used to accelerate as slow as possible and change gear as soon as possible, but I then thought that surely doing it this way would keep the engine colder for longer and so keep the damage period longer. As such I have always warmed the '5 up changing at c 3k and then after a couple of mins 3.5k until warm.

ISTR from a whileback when someone asked what the best way to break an engine in, someone said use full throttle at low rpm's to force the piston rings out??? Does the same apply for warming up an engine???

Anyone care to shed some light? (4/00)

I wouldn't use full trottle at low revs, it squeezes oil out of the bearing contact surfaces. Just drive the car gently for the first 10 mins, that's all (4/00)
I just keep the Revs below 3500-4000RPM for the first 10 minutes of driving from cold, or at least until the temperature gauge is up to the normal running temp. (4/00)
