Original 1.6i - actually 1598cc - 115bhp - tested 14 March 1999
Top (mean) 114mph - 6065rpm
Top(best) 116mph - 6170rpm
0-60 - 9.1 secs

1.8i - actually 1839cc - 128bhp - tested 9 February 1994
Top 115mph - 5800rpm
0-60 - 10.1 secs (wet track)

Reasons for little difference in figures:
1. Greater weight - up from 949kg to 1020kg
2. Longer final drive ratio

From the original brochure
Original 1.6 figure:
Max Power : 114bhp@6500rpm
Max Torque : 100lb/ft@ 5500rpm
Max speed : 121mph
0-62mph : 8.75s
Urban Cycle : 29.4mpg
Constant 56mph : 46.3mpg
Constant 75mph : 36.2mpg
Weight = 949 kg

'97 1.6 figure (Mk1):
Max Power : 90bhp@6000rpm
Max Torque : 97lb/ft@ 4000rpm
Max speed : 109mph
0-62mph : 10.6s
Urban Cycle : 25.7mpg
Extra Urban : 39.8mpg
Combined : 33.2mpg
Weight = 1020 kg

'97 1.8 figure (Mk1):
Max Power : 131bhp@6500rpm
Max Torque : 114lb/ft@ 5000rpm
Max speed : 123mph
0-62mph : 8.6s
Urban Cycle : 23.7mpg
Extra Urban : 38.2mpg
Combined : 31.0mpg
Weight = 1014 for 1.8I and 1040 kg for 1.8i (12/99)

I have some figures from test for an magazine here in Greece, but just 1.6 engine, sorry. Note all 1.6 cars over here are equipped with 195/50 tyres on 15' wheels. Also they claimed that bhp was 115 and not 110.

Top 193 km/h
0-62 10.2
Mazda claims 1.6 (1597)
110@6500 bhp
13.7@5000 torque
Top 191 km/h
Weight: 1015 kgs
Consumption: (litres per 100 km at constant speed of 90 120 km/h and urban cycle) 6.6/8.1/10.6

1.8 (1839)
140@6500 bhp
16.5@4500 torque
Top 205 km/h
Weight 1025 kgs
Consumption: (litres per 100 km at constant speed of 90 120 km/h and urban cycle) 7/8.5/11.2

I was reading that the actual power for the MK2 is 125 bhp for the 1.6 and 145bhp for the 1.9 engines in Japan and that Europe (and US) get the car with less power due to regulations. Is there a way to regain the lost ponies? Anyone knowing what the Japs got different? (1/00)
Higher octane unleaded fuel. (1/00)
I was quoted by a firm over here that is supposed to tune cars that they have a program for the MK2 and a cone filter (from ITG) that is supposed to help the car gain another 10bhp and 10% more torque. Is this possible? About 350 Pounds for the whole kit. (1/00)
This is a general query just to satisfy my curiosity, does anyone know what the difference is between the early 1.6 and the later 88b.h.p engine is? is the engine mechanically different, different pistons/lower compression or just a different ECU or what? I can't find the answer in any of my books. (3/00)
If yours is a 1990 model then it should have the 115bhp engine - I thought the lower spec engine was introduced around 1994 as a stripped out cheaper model to the then standard 1.8 model - which wasn't much different in performance to the original 1.6 in any case. (3/00)
Different ECU
Different valve timing by different camshafts
lower automatic car engine compression .. so different pistons .. and an argument over whether the engine is even the same .. seems to have come from poverty spec 323 not the turbo 323 that the original MX5 engine came from.. (3/00)
The pre-94 1.6 is a gem of an engine. It's the later 1.6s that got a totally new engine. This later engine was also done in something of a rush as Mazda rationalised their engine line-up, then they got told by Mazda UK that for tax reasons they needed the 1.6 back. (3/00)
A simple question with a simple answer. The older and later 1.6 engines are completely different engines. I think the only things they seem to have in common is the cubic capacity and they are fitted to a '5. (3/00)
What does the early 1.6 engine weigh? (8/00)
This was on miatapower the other day...
"Just had a complete 1.8L 96 long block shipped to me and the packing slip said 275 lbs (including pallet I assume). This is the long block (oil pan to cam cover) only minus all manifolds." (8/00)

Weight of various models:

Mk1 1.6i (115hp) .. about 970kg
Mk1 1.6i (90hp) .. 1020kg
Mk1 1.8i ........ 1014kg ... now why is this less than the 90hp one...?
Mk1 1.8iS .... 1040kg
Mk1 1.8 Roadster .. must be 1070kg with all that a/c, e/w and p/s
Mk2 1.6i ..... 1015kg
Mk2 1.8i...... 1025 kg
Mk2 1.8iS .. 1047kg
Official UK figures.. (8/00)
