| On removing the ally/ss plates on the doors I find
"same shape" plastic plates beneath with damn dangerous looking
screws coming out at me from inside the door. Is this normal? I've
tried easing the black plastic away from the door but it was getting
to the "oops" stage. Is there a knack to this or do you need to
remove the whole door card to get to the speakers? (1/00) |
Mk1 1.8 Roadster... you need to remove the door panel/card ..
need to remove door handle (2 screws), screw at opening lever, screw
at corner of pocket under cover.
Mk1 1.6 is slightly different as you have a better armrest but no
pocket. (1/00) |
| Roadsters may be different, but on my UK Spec car you remove the
whole door trim to get at the speakers. It takes 30 seconds. Three
screws in the armrest (one under a cover) and one screw in the door-opening-handle
and 'pull' I don't remove the speaker covers, they stay attached
to the door trim. (1/00) |
| I've got a v-spec with the MSSS
kit. The door speakers on this are surrounded by a metal panel,
which is held in place by about 6 screws. The screws attach the
panel to a black plastic plate, that is attached to the door somehow.
I took the metal cover off last night - but couldn't work out how
to get any further. I couldn't see a fixing mechanism for the speaker
grille, or how to remove the plastic backing plate. Any suggestions?
Also - if I want to replace the speakers - can I get something compatible
with the tweeter mounted on the top of the door? Will I need to
replace the tweeter at the same time? How is this attached to the
door? (11/00) |
| Speakers - remove door handle and door panel (beware the black
gookie stuff) Tweeters are attached to the door card and connected
to the door. I replaced mine but if you look the standard tweets
are around 3 inches which you can't buy (for a sensible price) in
the UK. I bough 1 inch tweeters and took them to bits and fitted
just the insides into the original tweeters using bath sealant.
No problems in six months so OK and look stock. (11/00) |
| Is this panel like ours (*just* visible in the referenced pic.!

) If so, forget unscrewing that silver/ally plate. You need to remove
the door card itself to get at the speakers. (11/00) |
| A delicate balancing act as I struggled to identify about 6 sets
of pre-outs on the back!!! Note that you're likely to get resistance
from the std. speakers in the doors as they are factory glued around
the foam gasket. Knife and yank! (11/00) |
| The door panel pulls off around the edge and the top slots into
the metal of the door, so unpop the left right and bottom edges
(you should be able to feel the plastic mounts spaced along the
edge of the door) and then lift and the panel comes off. This will
give you access to the speakers. (11/00) |
| You need to remove the whole door trim to access the speakers;
the "plastic backing" is permanently attached to the door trim.
(11/00) |
| You can remove the door trim by removing the screws on
the handle (under a cover that you'll need to shift) and a couple
around the storage and door latch. Once all screws have been removed,
you should be able to pull the trim out of its catches and then
lift upwards to unhook. Be careful if you have a tweeter as the
wires connecting it aren't very long, you'll need to disconnect
this otherwise someone will need to hold it out of the way. After
that, you have access to the door which will be covered by a clear
sheet of plastic stuck on to the door by the "Black Gunk from Hell",
you can peel off the plastic, but be warned, the black gunk will
get everywhere, it's like bubblegum. Then your home free. (6/01) |
