| The back illumination to the dash ( that comes
on when you switch your lights on ) on my car isn't working. The
indicators light up and main beam shows but the back lights don't.
I've just checked the bulbs and they're fine. (1/00) |
| Do the tail lights work? If not, try the tail light fuse - I'm
not absolutely sure that's where the panel lights are fused though.
Do the lights in the switches (eg hazard and retractor switches
and the ash tray illumination work? Or is your panel light dimmer
turned down? (1/00) |
| Yup, tail lights work...actually just got an email saying: Check
the bridge on the Front fog light switch blank. If the bridge is
broken it will cut off the supply to the dash illumination. This
would explain a lot as I fitted a switch for the hardtop demister
to a blank last weekend..hadn't got 'round to investigating why
that wasn't working yet!! (1/00) |
| OK disconnected switch and they still don't work. I spoke to a
guy at Mazda and he said it could possibly be a faulty control mechanism....presume
he means the bits that the indicator and wiper stalks go into???
Any ways of testing this??? (1/00) |
| I would have thought he meant the panel lights dimmer control.
You should be able to bridge the wires that the unit controls -
sorry can't help much beyond that - my Roadster doesn't have a dimmer,
and there is no circuit diagram in the workshop manual for this
bit - you need the electrical supplement for the full detail. Usually
there are three connections to these units, and one (black?) is
earth. Try bridging the other two with a piece of 5amp fuse wire
(just in case you get the wrong ones!) (not held with your fingers!)

| As far as I know, all later cars have provision for dimming the
dash lights. However not all had the dimmer fitted. but the wiring
was there, just shorted out with a plug. The dimmer goes in the
middle of the three switch positions on the right of the steering
wheel. So if you have fitted a new switch may be you have disturbed
something? (1/00) |
| Quite simply the circuit has been broken. You need to plug the
connector back in, and Hey Presto! Far better to put the de-mister
on a separate independent switch. But link it to the ignition or
it will merrily drain the battery after you have left the car and
forgot to switch it off. (1/00) |

Do the lights on the switches work? If not it's probably your
dimmer control. Sadly they are quite expensive, but you can probably
get one from a scrapyard. I can probably check the connections
for you so you can short the connector and get full brightness
lights as a test. (1/00)

| I have just bought my mx 5 eunos roadstar, it's a great car
but since having the alarm fitted we have lost the dashboard illumination
lights. can any one out there please help me? (2/00) |
|
My guess is that you now have an indicator or LED for the alarm
on your dash, where one of the unused switches used to be ? Middle
switch to the right of the ignition, I think ?
On some cars, this switch is actually used for the dash-light
dimmer. With cars without a dimmer, this blank switch contains
an electrical connection that forces the dash lights to "full"
brightness. Your alarm-fitter probably assumed it was just a 'blank',
unplugged it and reused the blank for your LED without reconnecting
the old wiring.
If so, you need to reconnect the blank to the wiring loom or
else find some way to properly short the connector. In any case,
explain this to the fitter and ask them to fix it - they will
remember which connector they removed (there will be three at
least behind there: rear-demist, dash-dimmer, front-fogs).
On the other hand, you may not have had your dash fitted with
an indicator in which case ignore all of the above and just ask
the alarm-fitter to fix it !! (2/00)

| Hi I have an Eunos 1.6i '90 The backlights on the dash and
on the heater controls don't work. The fuses seem OK It may be the
bulbs but as both are out I doubt it. Can any one help? (12/00) |
| Check that the dash dimmer control or the blanking plate if you
dont have the dimmer is connected correctly to the switch/blank.
There is a short on the blanking plate that gives full brightness,
if this becomes unplugged then the dash lights won't come on. (12/00) |
| Have you being messing with any of the switches on the right hand
side of the steering column? On some cars there is a dimmer here,
on others that don't have it, the blank switch has the wiring behind.
This needs to be connected to the back of the switch or the backlights
don't work. (12/00) |
