| I found a guide to putting a starter button in
the car, I dunno 'bout you, but I think this would be kinda cool.

| Sean Archer made a nice one too. http://saturn.spaceports.com/~miata/brb.htm

| I have been meaning to get around to this for a while, but just
haven't found the time. Someday soon maybe - running out of other
stuff to do to the car!! (4/00) |
| I decided I wanted one after driving a S2000,But have yet to find
a suitable button tried maplins/RS....ect. all rather tacky. the
one on the Honda is perfect 1" bright red ,chrome bezel ,flush fit
with START ENGINE written on it (maybe Honda will sell me one?)
Someone must sell nice buttons. (4/00) |

Only available as part of a complete assembly for ~GBP30,000?
Seriously though, Demon Tweeks
do a number of different starter buttons in various sizes... None
are red but this could be easily remedied. You'd have to devise
some method of putting the lettering on, but you could take the
opportunity to take a bit of licence, e.g. START PRAYING.
Maybe Honda will sell you one. It might be worth enquiring -
the price will probably be either surprisingly reasonable or ridiculously
expensive. (4/00)

My Waterloo has been the fact my car was on a dealer servicing
deal which I've screwed enough with various mods, but as of Friday
that's my deal with the devil up and then the fun can really begin
(I can't wait until they see a MK2 soft-top on a MK1 car - way
best mod yet!!!).
Also, there is no cutting or splicing of wires but you do need
to get existing wires out of a connector block which is proving
more difficult than I imagined. I have removed my cigarette lighter
to see what the button looks like and it looks good.
When finished I'll post instructions, but to get anyone else
on their way I can supply info on relays and buttons and sources
of them. I've differed from Keith's set-up in that he used two
single pole relays whilst I've gone for one double pole relay
to cut down on costs. (4/00)

| There is a BRB which fits into the space to the right of the steering
wheel (fog light switch etc.) - it's from Japan, made by Zoom and
Leni Metro is selling for about $100. (4/00) |

| I've looked in the europa cateloge. If anyones got one, on page
40. There are several push-start buttons there. A 22mm push switch
is £5.80. Its a standard black switch, but you can buy a chome bezel
with push once in red writing on it. That costs £5.39. Part numbers
are I3320 and OTB respectively. You can phone them on 01283 815609
or email info@europaspares.com
if you need more info. (4/00) |

I understand that a MK2 BRB is pretty much the same as a MK1,
except the colours of the feed wires (ie ST and IG2) may be different.
Go to www.miataforum.com
and search for BRB for more details.
In terms of what I'm using, I got the button itself from Cutler
Hammer and the relay from Siemens. Go to www.cutler-hammer.com
where you will find a downloadable catalogue. In this there is
a whole host of combinations.
You will require a operator (button), mouting adapter and a contact
block. These can be bought separately, or can be bought as a set
for ca. 6-7 GBP ISTR. I chose a 25mm diameter non-illuminated
momentary action normally open (NO) flush button with a chrome
bezel. This fits nicely where the cigarette lighter is in a MK1.
You could also choose illuminated buttons, black bezels, extended
buttons (worried about accidental knocking of this when engine
is running)...
Also, you can purchase a legend to stick on your button, eg start,
or have a custom one made, eg eject. The cat. no. of the 'set'
I bought was E22P2A. I bought this from Bennett and Fountain in
Beckenham (0181 650 0085) although other suppliers in the UK do
exist.
As for the relay, I got a free dual pole relay from a mate at
Siemens Passive Components - the one described by Sean Archer
in his write-up was not available so the cat. no. is V23134-A1052-C243
(I think you only need the first 6-7 digits). I don't know about
distributors of this but if you're struggling I could try and
find out. I'm using 27A rated wire (looks to be same gauge as
Mazda OEM) which I believe to be more than adequate for this application.
BUT I haven't finished yet, so be aware I have not tested this.

| Just for the people that want a remote starter button like on
the new Honda 2000, I found a site that is doing them visit this
site for you local dealer price about £25. Size is 25mm diameter
you need to drill a 20mm hole for the base, also they come in chrome
or illuminated. http://www.kroozin.co.uk/index_IE4.asp

| That sounds a bit expensive - I used a modular switch from Farnell
and AFAIR all the bits came to around 15. If anyone's interested,
there's a picture at http://www.njarman.freeserve.co.uk/startbutton.html,
and it's also somewhere on mx5mods.co.uk.

| I fitted the BRB from Donutz the other day (cheers Andy!),
just a quick question about the way it lights up... The button lights
up when the ignition is turned and is ready to be pressed. Button
is pressed, engine starts, but the light stays permanently on. Has
anyone who has fitted this kit got a way of turning the bulb off
after the engine starts or just simply getting it to turn off after
10/20 seconds or something....? (9/01) |
| Need to install an extra relay on the light circuit I THINK. Have
it wired so the contacts are NORMALLY OPEN so when the ignition
is ON the feed will be closed. Then pull a feed to the coil of the
relay to a circuit that is live when the engine is running. That
will then CLOSE the relay and OPEN the circuit - thus extinguishing
the light. (9/01) |
