| Is it possible to adjust the bonnet? After I open
mine to access the engine, the bonnet is higher on the left (as
you look at the car from the front) when I put the bonnet back down.
I can push the bonnet from the top and it will lay down properly.
Any ideas. (2/00) |
| I also am having a problem my bonnet ! has started to rattle.
The rattle goes if I press down on the bonnet !! Is there any adjustment
in the latch to pull the bonnet in tighter !! (2/00) |

I had the exact same thing ! Bloody annoying...
There are two bolts and one nut (or is it three bolts) holding
the bonnet lock in place - two holding it's bracket to the body,
and the one in the middle holding the 'trigger'. You need to loosen
all three, and realign the mechanism. It took me a couple of goes
to get it completely right... (2/00)

| There is no adjustment. The problem is one well known since 1989.
The trick is glue appropriate rubber buffers onto the opposing on
the lower buffer point. I found an ideal solution to be to use one
of the small clear polyurethane 8mm dia stick on furniture buffers
on each side. (2/00) |
| This has bothered me for a while but I've always forgotten
to ask until now... My bonnet must be pressed down pretty hard to
get it to shut (certainly harder than it used to be when new) and
seems to lock in place about 3-5mm lower than it should. Can this
be adjusted in any way? (4/01) |
| The bonnet catch can be raised and lowered by slackening the
mounting bolts. I did this myself a couple of months ago and if
I remember correctly you have to slacken them off quite a bit before
the latch with start to move. (4/01) |
| As far as I know there is no adjustment possible, although no
doubt others will correct me.. On mine I smeared the entire catch
mechanism with shed loads of grease. This worked for about a day...
So, I put a small amount of sticky back foam (the type you would
put around the edge of secondary double glazing) on the area where
the two rubber bonnet stops touch on either side of the inside of
the bonnet, so it is raised ever so slightly than previously, and
so pulls that bit more on the catch and so stops it squeeking. (4/01) |
| This is quite a common M1 issue - a few turns of plastic insulation
tape around the loop on the bonnet woorks well, you'll need to redo
it every 6 months or so as it gets a bit mangled after lots of closures.
Use blue tape for full colour matched effect ;) (4/01) |
| Easily fixed. Get some of those self adhesive polyurethane bump
stops 6mm Dia from your local hardware shop. Peel of the adhesive
cover and insert 1 ea, adhesive up into the recess in rubber bonnet
stops. close the bonnet down onto them for location. Presto - fixed.
