| How do I remove the binnacle cover on a Mk1 to
change the speedo backgrounds etc? There are two screws underneath
which I have unscrewed but I can't seem to pull the thing off. (9/00) |
| You need to remove the steering wheel shroud. Depending on your
wheel, you might need to remove the wheel, but probably not. Then
you have to pull hard, straight out towards you, assuming you're
sitting in the driving seat.. Beware, the plastic lugs which hold
the spring clips are very brittle and break easily, especially if
you don't push it back in exactly the right orientation. (9/00) |
| You need the thingy off between the steering wheel and binacle.
Three screws underneath ones a tw?t to remove then it pulls aparts
and the binacle pulls forward. (9/00) |
| By being very carefull. There are three clips behind the binnacle
which mounts on the underside at the top are attached to. I discovered
a couple of weeks back when I went to remove my speed limiter that
the company who had put in my imobiliser had snapped two of these
(as the right hand side lifted easilly), I then jiggled and the
left side came up, which is when I discovered what had happened
:-( Having said that, on putting it back together again it looked
loose, but I've had no squeeks from it. Does anyone actually know
a way of removing the binnacle with out breaking these bits as there's
nothing in the Grainger (9/00) |
| Must be unlucky; mine just came off fine. One clip left behind,
but it didn't actually break. You need to grip the binnacle with
both hands and pull towards you and slightly up. Removing the instrument
pod is a bit like working in the dark. You feel to undo the two
wiring clips, and somehow unclip the speedo cable. Putting it all
back is a bit tricky. (9/00) |
