I'm just about to go around Spain in the MX-5. But we seem
to have hit a snag.
We need to add some headlight beam adjusters for european
travel. Yet none of the adjusters sold by Halfords, RAC or AA
have the MX-5 listed. So we don't know what shape we should cut
them to.
Several Mazda garages have told us to buy the Lucas set and
bring them in. They will then charge a huge amount of money to
cut and fit them. Surely it should be easier than this. Has anyone
else had the same experience? How did you overcome it?
I'm tempted just to cut them to the lines for a mini. I'm
going in a couple days so any help / advice would be gratefully
received. By the way it is an M reg with pop up lights if this
helps. (6/00)

| If it has pop ups then ALL the yellow beam adjusters should work
OK. I use the Halford ones and have never had a problem. (6/00) |
| I took thick black duck/duct tape and did it "on the fly" over
there. Can't really go wrong. (6/00) |
| ust cut some black sticky tape to fit the roughly triangular area
on the right of the lens, just level with and below centre - that's
right as you're looking forward - so your left as you're kneeling
in front of the car doing the job (ooh...er.....) Both lights are
the same. We came up with a problem re Mk 2's last year. Did anyone
resolve it? Apparently there's no way to convert a Mk 2 light for
continental use - or did someone find a way? (6/00) |

The MKII headlights dont have those nice marks on telling
you where to stick your sticky tape so you dont blind those nice
French chaps. Also, the glass covering of the headlight is not
glass, which means sticking things on them (or more rather getting
them off cleanly) is not as straight forward and often leaves
marks.
1) Has anybody got a template thingy for the MKII headlight
they could fax me so I can stick tape in the right places?
2) Has anybody used a particular type of tape and got it all off
easily afterwards without the lenses being marked? (8/00)

| From my observations during the last three weeks, people with
'clear glass' headlamps don't (cannot) convert them - this seems
to apply to the majority of recent cars - Fords (esp Focus), Peugeots,
Renaults, BMW's, Hondas, etc. And Mk 2 MX5's. Actually about half
of those with the familiar lenses don't seem to understand where
to stick the tape - I saw all sorts of weird things - on the wrong
side of the lens, top half rather than bottom half, etc. Suggest
you turn down the lamps to the lowest setting (ie for heaviest load)
and be careful on dark roads! (8/00) |
| I just got back a week ago and just dipped my lights all the way
down with the switch in the car (8/00) |
| A kit is available which covers the MKII from Halfords for ~5.99
(Lucas?). (8/00) |
