What are the list opinions on the best anti-theft devices for the MX5 - as well as the alarm / immobiliser - I currently use a "Wheel-to-Pedal" Krooklock. I know the wheel can be sawed through in 30 seconds and that's it ... but it at least it looks neat and is easy to store in the car.

What do other people use in the 5 .. Space is a bit cramped for storing a big DiskLock - anyone found a neat, easy-to-store and really effective anti-theft device ?? Curious to know as I'm sure there is a really good product out there that we all should be using !! (5/00)

There was an interesting thing a while ago that rated each type of steering, gear & pedal lock and interestingly some of the cheapest came out best. At the end of the day I use a standard lock as a visible deterrent but no matter what you spend if someone wants to take the car they will, assuming they can get around the immobiliser.

The removable steering wheel is a good deterrent I would have though although you would have to take it with you to be really secure, after all you can get into the boot once inside the car. (5/00)

Some people use a length of plastic coated chain (as used to lock up motorbikes) wrapped around the seatframe and the steering wheel. Highly visible, and none too comfortable for the thief to sit in the car. (5/00)

Mine's worse than that! 6 feet of heavy-duty chain (not wrapped in plastic) going throught the steering wheel, over to and through the arm-rest on the passenger door, back to the steering wheel and down around the seat frame. Cost a small fortune (60 quid for the chain, 7 quid for the padlock).

Need to be a bit acrobatic entering the car :) but it means that the passenger door & seat cannot be used, plus very very uncomfortable for anyone getting into the drivers seat. Plus it's highly visible (hence the attention it receives from passers-by sometimes :) The chain is stored under the driver's seat when not in use. (5/00)

I use a device called a Bullock T (01722 330336). It has two jaws which close around the clutch and brake pedal when pushed in, and is extremely hard to crack, mainly because of the limited space down there.

A few years ago, when I bought it, it was the only device that the Which? "ex"-criminal couldn't crack in the given time (about 5 mins, I think).

It's also pretty compact and tucks nicely behind the seat (even when fully set back).

The only problem with it is that it's not particularly visible from outside the car, so it's not much of a deterrent in that way. I asked them for some replacement stickers as the originals were on my last car, but they haven't turned up yet. (5/00)

I like the Autolock 2000 or the Halfords version which they just brand. Covers 3/4 of wheel and the arm pushed back inside so storage space is reduced. Also Thatcham Cat 3 and Sold Secure approved from memory. (5/00)
I have had a removable steering wheel for about 3 years- try nicking my car with no steering wheel and going for a joy ride! I also have a microwave alarm and 2 immobilisers - these are not as visible as the missing steering wheel though. (5/00)
