| Help! My Electric Arial has stopped working
on my MK1 Eunos Roadster! It goes up but I have to push it down
by hand now..... Any body got any idea how I can fix it????? (11/99) |
| http://www.miata.net/garage/power_antenna_repair.html
is worth looking at. (11/99) |
| Same happened to me - sounds like your relay needs changing. (11/99) |
| It might just need cleaning and a dab of some PTFE type lubricant.
(That's what I did when my cars aerial got stuck and it's worked
OK ever since.) (11/99) |
| When I bought my MX5 I noticed that the electric aerial did not
go all the way up, but the motor was still running. As I thought
it might damage the motor, I took it back to the garage to get them
to repair it 'under the warranty' but apparently all they had to
do was to screw all the sections back into each other . ie starting
at the bottom, one section at a time, screw it into the one below.
This may not cure yours but it's worth a try. (11/99) |
| not the relay, the arial is dirty/bent. If dirty, take it out
and clean, if bent, you'll have to get a replacement arial. No need
to buy an entire unit, just the arial itself...like my 'local friendly
mazda dealer' tried to make me believe... (11/99) |
| Yeah this is true - I bought one - it was around 16 quid. But
dead easy to fit. Ask for a mast... (11/99) |
| It's probably the toothed belt inside the aerial - take it to
bits and see if it's OK. If it's died (they fall to bits eventually)
then Mazda will sell you a new one for about 17 quid - it's easy
to fit and should only take 10 mins. (11/99) |
| After a bit of investigation, It appears that this is the case.
The toothed cable has broken and this was preventing the aerial
to raise to it's full extent... So it's off to MAZDA I go! How do
I fit the new cable? or is it a complete aerial??? (11/99) |
| When I purchased my 92 black & tan it had the power antenna kinked
in the lower segment and wouldn't go all the way down. I purchased
a new mast from mazda for about £20 and replaced it myself.
It's a little tricky but can be done. As I recall you must loosen
the nut on top and pull the old mast out along with the plastic
geared track. Be careful and remove the copper shielding connector
from the bottom of the old shaft because it has to be reused on
the new one. After swapping the shielding connector over to the
new mast carefully thread the geared track into the antenna body.
It may take a couple of tries but with some care you can feed it
into the gearing a little way. Then turn the radio on and off a
couple times helping to feed the track in. Eventually it will be
pulled all the way in. (11/99) |
| My electric aerial does not work. Is this usually the motor
and if so is there a cheap fix? I beleive a new one is quite expensive
(12/99) |
| Is power getting to the motor? Does the motor make any noise?
(12/99) |
| My aerial was duff when I got my car from the dealer. I have Rung
Mazda and for a whole unit you are looking at £217. The place I
bought car has fitted another aerial but don't know if it is a Mazda
one. (12/99) |
| The saga of my electric aerial has now norrowed the fault to
the jp radio not sendin a dignal to the aerial...If I want to replace
it for a standars UK model is there a special bracket to hold the
radio in if so who sells them? (12/99) |
| You can get a radio holder bracket from Halfords - or presumably
any other car audio supplier. You might need two, depending on what
you stick in the spare hole. I used a Moss cassette holder - it
needs a bracket too, but I cut the old din2 radio bracket down.
(12/99) |
| Has any body replaced the Mazda electric aerial with a non
Mazda one?. It seems the wheel arch is in the way. (1/00) |
| I haven't seen any aftermarket antennae yet which will fit, except
for the old fashion unit Moss sell. (It isn't controlled by the
radio, but with a seperate switch!!! and that in the 21st Century!!)
I have put an oem antenne from an 95 on my 91 and even that didn't
fit! The wheel arch on the 94 on cars is different, to allow for
the antenna. Don't know if the early cars had eleccy antennas, but
if they did, they must have been a different design. To make it
fit I had to make a dent in the wheel arch and cut a bit of metal
away in the wing (it's double walled). Nasty piece of work...wouldn't
want to do it again. (1/00) |
| I need a replacement Arial mast for my Roadster. Mazda will
only supply the complete unit (Motor+ Mast) £186! Any Idea's where
I can get just a mast from? (Phoned one breakers yard they had a
complete one, but they didn't want to split it) (1/00) |
| Ask them for part number N00766A3X it fits both MK1 and MK2 (1/00) |
| Absolutely FANTASTIC! Hit it right on the head! £17.00's (plus
club discount to apply!) (Funny how the same Mazda dealer can supply
it now I gave them the Part number!! Before It was the whole unit
or nothing!) (1/00) |
| Has anyone fitted an electric aerial, cos I'm having problems
with mine. I've got a 96 Merlot with the screw in fixed aerial and
want to replace with an electric one. Tried everything but nothing
happens (although there is a faint clicking from within the aerial
unit) Funny thing is that it did work on my 92 Roadster with the
same radio/cd unit! (7/00) |
|
The clicking is probably a relay in the electric aerial which
energises when you turn the stereo on, so that indicates the 'on'
signal (feed) is ok from the stereo to the aerial.
Have you got a constant +12v feed to the electric aerial in the
Merlot? You need one.
Also it will need to be properly grounded (earthed) - I'm not
sure if this is done through the mounting bolts or a separate
earth cable/strap. (7/00)

I have a 1998 R reg 1.8i MX-5. It's a Mark 1. I have an electric
arial that I'd like to fit to it. I've connected everything up
and nothing happens. The audio connector (that goes to the stereo)
plugs right in. That's ok. There are two other connectors. Both
have 4 pins. The arial has these connectors too. They also plug
together just fine. One of the connectors plugs into a little
box containing two fuses (it came with the arial - either from
the old car or with the arial itself?). The two connectors car-side
were present but unused with my old static arial. I plugged one
of the car connectors into the electric arial - the other into
the little fuse box that gets mounted to the side of the arial
and the audio connector to the arial's audio connector. Turned
the key to on and it doesn't move. Started the engine - same thing...
Any ideas - have I got some wiring to do - is it too much to assume
it'll just plug in? I have the wiring from the old car still plugged
into this arial and I can see that there are more wires in the
old car's wiring than I have in mine... I guess the old car was
an import so it's probably different - has anyone retrofitted
an import's electric arial to a UK car?
P.S. I'm planning on getting some electric windows from wolfmiata
- apparently plug n' play - minimal installation required with
convenient full-colour instructions, illuminated buttons etc etc
- anyone had any experience of the kits? They're a UK company
despite the name... www.wolfmiata.com

|
| I guess these are the same kits that Moss sell. I bought one a
couple of weeks ago but haven't got around to fitting it yet. Seems
straightforward enough though. (6/01) |
| Presumably because they've realised there's a significantly bigger
market out there and accordingly used the car's name in that locale.
They are indeed from Harlow in Essex. Here's an answer to my query
re their electric window kits - which have been well commented upon
in recent posts to miata.net... (6/01) |
| I installed the Moss kit a couple of years ago, not had any problems
at all. Install does take time and you have to battle with the black
gunk from hell (you will know what I mean when you do the job) All
in all it took a couple of hours to do each door but I was not rushing...
Just got some OEM window switches from Dave K at Powerdrift so car
will look totally stock :) Just need to get a 1 touch down module
now... (6/01) |
| Was the electric aerial in the Roadster/MX-5 fully automatic ?
I think I have only ever seen semi automatic versions in 5's...
(3/01) |
| The aerial on my 97 1.8iS is fully automatic (6/01) |
| All the ones I've seen have been fully automatic.... (6/01) |
| What's a semi automatic aerial? (6/01) |
| Think (but not 100%) you have to raise the aerial using a switch.
After you switch off the stereo the aerial will go down again...
(6/01) |
| If you got the switches from a 92 or later Roadster, they already
have a one-touch facility on the drivers side. The circuitry for
this is in the switch box itself. (6/01) |
| Ok so I was wrong :) I have the solid stainless steel aerial so
was only going on other cars I have seen... (6/01) |
| Not sure what age the switches are, I will only be able to tell
once I have installed them though I guess... Hopefully they will
tie in with the current Moss window mechanism nicely. (6/01) |
| Oh, in that case I dont have the auto down...I think that I would
like to have auto down and up on both sides though so not a real
worry... Does anyone know why the up and down on the window switch
is IMO bakc to front ? To make the window go down you press the
top of the switch! How wierd... (6/01) |
| Is yours wired up right? In mine, I push the bottom of the switch
for down, and either pull the bottom up, or push the top of the
switch to put them up. (6/01) |
| Looking at the switch that I have infront of me, the down graphic
is at the top of the switch...unless you install it with the writing
upside down (sort of thing)... (6/01) |
| Infact I think that I am talking rubbish, I think that the writing
is sort of upside down. I.e. the down arrow points towards the stereo
(If you see what I mean)... Anyway, I will find out later on when
I install it... (6/01) |
