After a briefing from the Clerk of the Course, it is usual for first-timers to follow a pace car for a couple of laps, just so that you know where the circuit goes. Most tracks have alternative configurations and these will be blanked off by solid rows of cones. At Donington we are using the National circuit, so we wont be using the Melbourne Loop (see enclosed circuit map). You are then on your own, so take it easy to start with, and watch the lines taken by other cars through the corners. Bear in mind though, they might be learning as well, so be warned :) At most trackdays, youll see the odd cones at the side of the track at corners. The first one marks the point where you should have finished all your braking and where you turn into the corner. Most people dont fully utilise the excellent brakes on the 5, so as you get used to the circuit, try leaving your braking a little later and you will be surprised how good they really are. If you can heel & toe, so much the better, as you can make the down shifts smoother and stay on the brakes all the time. This is particularly true at the end of the Dunlop Straight into Goddards, as youll be coming down from over 100 to about 40 for the corner. Its important to get all your braking done in a straight line, so that you are off the brakes as you commit for the corner. Remember slow in fast out. The second cone marks the apex, and is the point you should be aiming for. From here on you should be feeding the power back in as you wind off the lock and aiming for the last one, which shows you where you should be at the exit of the corner, assuming you got the first two right ! Try to use as much of the track as possible as it enables you to increase the radius of the corner and carry more speed down the next straight. As the day progresses, your pace will increase and corners will start to flow, but the important thing is to drive at your own pace and keep it smooth. TRACK ETIQUETTE. You will probably be amongst the slowest cars on the circuit, so it is essential to watch your mirrors, all of them, all the time. Overtaking is only allowed on the straights and only on the left hand side, so if you see one or more cars closing fast, pull off the line, signal right, and let them past. Its very easy to forget, especially if you are closing up on someone yourself, that there are faster cars/drivers on the tarmac at the same time. In the case of the all 5 group, you will be sharing the track with very evenly matched cars, and this can cause problems as little convoys develop. Led by a slower or inexperienced/inconsiderate driver, everyone is held up round the corners but once on the straight, the leader pulls away and no-one can get past. This can happen, particularly if the leading car is a turbod or supercharged, but the driver isnt ;-) The same thing happens at the next corner, and the next, and the next In the event that you find you are leading a queue, pull over on the straight, lift off, and let everyone past. If this procedure is use a few times, the faster drivers will vanish into the distance, and you can drive at your own pace. Similarly, if you notice another 5 is slowly but steadily reeling you in until he is behind you, let him past, and then watch to see where he is quicker than you, and why. If you find yourself being held up, dont try to force yourself past or you will be spotted on CCTV, and youll wind up having a long chat with the Clerk of the Course. Instead, back right off until you have plenty of clear track in front of you, then get the hammer down again. If you feel that someone is not playing fair, and is persistently holding people up, let me know at the end of the session, and Ill have a word ;-) THE TWISTY BITS I wont try to cover every corner on the circuit, but a few deserve a special mention. 1) Craner Curves. A down hill, sweeping right-left and without doubt, the fastest corner on the circuit and the most exciting. Exiting Redgate in third (and using a bit of rumble strip if youre confident), its up to fourth before the right hand sweep, and then the dive left before braking hard for the Old Hairpin. With practice, and in a standard 1.8, its pedal to the metal all the way from Redgate, hitting about 95 at the second apex, but its not one for the fainthearted, so take it easy until you have got the line right. This takes quite a bit of time because you cant actually see Craner until youve crested the hill, so its difficult to know where to be on the track. Great feeling when you nail it though :) 2) Mcleans. Basically a textbook third gear right hander, but complicated by the left hand kink that precedes it. A late apex on the kink enables you to brake in a straight line, tight on the left hand side of the track before turning in. Apex the kink too soon and you are way out of line for the right hander. 3) Coppice. A tricky double apex right hander with a blind approach. The hardest corner to get right and one of the most important because the exit speed governs your speed down Starkeys Straight. Because the entrance is over the crest of a hill its very easy to turn in too late, so its worth trying to find a visual clue, but its not easy. If you nail the first apex you can use full power and let the car run out, missing the second apex by about 6 and winding up on the edge of the rumble strip on the exit as you head down the straight. 4) Redgate. The turn in point is miles past where you think it should be ! Watch the line taken by people who know it. If all the above sounds a bit technical, dont worry about it, but I hope it means something to someone :) There should be instructors available throughout the day, and they are very good. However, dont book one straight away. Instead, wait until you have done a couple of sessions. That way you will have had enough time to roughly learn the circuit, but not so long that you have already got into bad habits. Some of us have already done several days at Donny, and since there will probably be 5s in all three groups, try to have a ride with someone who has been there before not as good as an instructor session but more accessible ;-) Remember, trackdays are a fun way to explore the limits of your car in a safe and controlled environment. Circuit organisers take a very strong line if anyone is seen racing or driving dangerously, and offenders are black-flagged and have to return to the pits, so the overall standard of driving is generally very good. We have a very good record at the circuit and since we will be in the public eye due to the fact there will be a lot of us there, lets keep it that way. I hope the above has answered a few questions, and I sincerely hope you have a safe and enjoyable day. Please complete and sign the indemnity form(s) and bring them with you on the 15th , as well as your driving licence. (Those of you not in the exclusive 5 group will receive extra information direct from the circuit next week.) Richard Foster Motorsport Co-ordinator.
